How to know if shoes are too small for your child

How to know if your child’s shoes are too small (clear signs)

Children’s feet grow fast, sometimes faster than we expect! That’s why choosing the right shoe size is essential for their comfort, healthy development, and everyday well-being. At Conguitos, we support your little one from their very first steps as a baby all the way through adolescence, designing footwear made for every stage. Today we’ll show you how to spot when your child’s shoes have become too small and when it’s time to change them.

Signs that the shoes are no longer the right size

Even if the shoes look like they still fit, there are some clear signs that they may be too small:

  • Tight or curled toes: If you notice red marks on your child’s toes or instep after taking the shoes off, it’s a warning sign.
  • Damaged or ingrown toenails: Shoes that are too small can put pressure on the nails and cause discomfort.
  • Chafing or blisters: Especially on the heel or the sides of the foot.
  • Difficulty putting shoes on or taking them off: If they used to slip on easily and now they don’t, the size is probably no longer right.
  • Changes in the way they walk: If your child walks awkwardly, trips more often, or avoids running, they may be uncomfortable.

How to check your child’s shoe size at home

A simple tip is to check the space between the longest toe and the front of the shoe. There should be approximately 0.8 to 1.2 cm of space to allow for natural foot movement and growth. For babies and first walkers, this allowance is especially important, as their feet are still developing.

It’s also recommended to check the size at the end of the day, when the foot is slightly more swollen, and always with the socks your child usually wears.

At Conguitos, we design footwear specifically for each stage of growth:

  • Baby shoes: Soft materials, flexible soles, and designs that respect the natural development of the foot.
  • Boys and girls shoes: Durable, comfortable shoes designed to support them in their everyday activities, from school to the playground
  • Teen shoes: Style, comfort, and a perfect fit for a stage when the foot is more developed but still needs proper support.

How often should you check children’s shoe size?

As a general rule:

  • Babies: Every 2–3 months.
  • Children: Every 3–4 months.
  • Teenagers: At least twice a year.

Shoes that are too small can affect your child’s comfort and foot development. Checking the size regularly and choosing shoes suited to their age is key. At Conguitos, we make it easy with collections designed to grow with them, always offering maximum comfort and the designs you love.

Because every step matters… and we want to be there with you for each and every one of them.
